Power Dynamos on Saturday beat arch-rivals Nkana 1-0 at home at Arthur Davies Stadium in this season’s final instalment of the Kitwe derby.

Nkana’s defeat put their hopes of consolidating a fourth place finish under threat following the loss on the penultimate day of the 2021/2022 FAZ Super League season.

The two sides went into the break deadlocked but the derby drama did not disappoint.

Nkana midfielder Jacob Ngulube had two great chances that he sent wide within the fourth and eighth minutes.

Power, too, were guilty of wasting opportunities, with Clatous Mulolani denied by the woodwork in the 20th minute, while Brian Mwila missed a sitter in the 38th minute after beating Nkana goalkeeper Mangani Banda.

But there was a heated personal duel in the first half when Nkana striker Alex Ngonga had a hard time trying to evade the shadow of Power defender Aaron Katebe.

The two almost came to blows in the 33rd minute but were pulled apart by the referee and teammates.

Meanwhile, the deadlock was broken early in the second half but it came via a proverbial derby own-goal when Nkana defender Derrick Mukombozi turned-in Mulolani’s attempt from a Joshua Mutale corner.

In the first leg, it was Power defender Paul Banda who scored an own-goal in their 2-0 away loss at Nkana.

The result also lifted a huge burden off Power’s shoulders who had lost their last two derby meetings by similar 2-0 margins both away in the first leg and at Arthur Davies last season.

Saturday’s victory sees Power rise from sixth to fifth on 47 points, two points behind Nkana, while Zanaco, who drop to sixth on 46 points, play on Sunday at home against Indeni in a match they must win to ensure the battle for fourth place goes to the final day of the campaign.
