Chelsea FC manager Thomas Tuchel has had to defend Edouard Mendy after the team’s humiliating defeat to Brentford FC over the weekend.

The reigning world and European champions were beaten 4-1 by the Bees in a Premier League encounter which was played at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Antonio Rudiger handed the Blues the lead, but goals from Vitaly Janelt (brace) Christian Eriksen and Yoane Wissai helped the visitors secure a big win in the London Derby clash.

Having been the hero for Chelsea in the reverse fixture as they defeated Brentford 1-0 in October 2021, Mendy endured a poor game on Saturday.

Tuchel reflected on the 2021 Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper’s performance having helped Senegal win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title and also qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals.

“Actually, I have to watch it again. I think it is an unthankful game for a goalkeeper. Also for him, he has a lot to process,” Tuchel said on Football London.

“That is why he goes and plays these tight matches – a rematch of the African Cup Final to qualify for the Qatar World Cup.

“He does another penalty shootout and he can feel it. He is part of the team and unfortunately, he couldn’t help us as he did in the first match.”

Mendy, who was named 2021 AFCON Goalkeeper of the Tournament, keeping a clean sheet in the final, has kept 11 clean sheets from 25 matches in the Premier League this term.

Only Manchester City’s Ederson, Liverpool FC star Allisson and Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal have kept more clean sheets than the African star in the competition this season.
