Mumamba Numba wants to quickly forget about Zesco United’s early exit from the 2022 ABSA Cup to focus on the tough job ahead of defending their FAZ Super League title.

The record six-time ABSA Cup champions stumbled for a second straight season in the competition this time at the quarterfinal stage after losing 5-4 on post-match penalties to Green Eagles following a 2-2 draw.

Saturday’s loss was a step down from Zesco’s runners-up finish in the 2021 ABSA Cup final where they lost 3-1 on spot-kicks to outgoing champions Lusaka Dynamos following a scoreless draw.

The ABSA Cup has now eluded Numba twice as Zesco coach who had to compensate for it last season by winning the 2020/2021 FAZ Super League title in his first year in charge.

“Our aim was to get to the final and probably lift the trophy but that hasn’t happened and we now have to shift our attention to the league,” Numba said.

“Of course it is important for us to win the league championship because this is the only thing that we have to fight for now.

“We won the Charity Shield but the ABSA Cup has eluded us again so we just have to work hard in our remaining games so that we can defend the league championship.”

But Zesco are in a very tight race to try and defend their title with eight games left to play.

Zesco are currently second on the log on 47 points, five points behind leaders Red Arrows and are a point ahead of third placed Eagles.
