Mumamba Numba says there was never any doubt in his mind that Zesco United would beat Konkola Blades on Saturday after scoring two late goals to earn a 2-0 home win at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Second half substitutes Thabani Kamusoko and Enock Sakala Junior scored a goal each in the last eleven minutes of the game to see Zesco collect its third straight FAZ Super League victory.
“We took a bit of time to score goals because Konkola Blades had five guys at the back which was very difficult for us to penetrate,” Numba said.
“That is why we emphasized that the only way to penetrate is by taking the ball to the flanks and then we will create the scoring opportunities and we managed to get the two goals.”
Kamusoko, who came on for John Chingandu just after the hour mark, turned in a Fackson Kapumbu cross from the left in the 78th minute.
Halftime substitute Sakala, who replaced Winston Kalengo, scored the final goal in the 87th minute when he was put through by midfielder Chanda Mukuka.
“I give credit to the players, they showed character from beginning to the end which was lacking in the team in the first round of the season but from what we are seeing now, this is the Zesco that we know,” Numba added.
Zesco move from third to second, exchanging places with Green Eagles who were also in Ndola but across town at Indeni where they finished scoreless.
The defending FAZ Super League champions have 47 points, one point more than Eagles but still five points behind leaders Red Arrows with eight matches left to play before the 2021/2022 title is decided.
Blades are second from bottom on 24 points as they battle to stay up in their first season back since 2017.
