Nkana beat a stubborn Kafue Celtic 2-0 at home on Saturday to put behind them a difficult week at their Kitwe camp.
They came into the game in the wake of rumours that Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi was handed a two-match ultimatum following a poor run of results that saw them drop from fourth to seventh and had picked just a point from two games.
That news didn’t go down well with Nkana’s fans who feel indebted after Chambeshi saved them from relegation last season after taking charge in the latter half of the season.
But Nkana earned the win the hard way against an efficient Celtic who tested goalkeeper Kelvin Malunga.
Malunga had an outstanding game when he kept out quality shots from Arthur Muleya in the fourth minute, Brian Chilimina in the 12th minute and Richard Daka in the 21st minute.
However, it was Nkana’s experience that was the difference ,with goals in each half against the FAZ Super League debutants.
Ronald Kampamba punished Celtic goalkeeper Clement Kasongo after his poor clearance fell straight into the Nkana strikers’ path, who made no mistake from the opportunity.
Nkana’s final goal was the stuff of resilience and came in stoppage time through captain Diamond Chikwekwe, who hammered in the ball from outside the box.
The win lifts Nkana from seventh and back to number four on 40 points, displacing Green Buffaloes, who lost 1-0m away at Kansanshi Dynamos through a Jesse Were goal.
Celtic stay top of the bottom four relegation zone with eight games in which to ensure their survival in their first-ever top-flight campaign.
