Zesco United coach Mumamba Numba has described their back-to-back top four wins as encouraging indicators with nine games left in their race to successfully defend their FAZ Super League title.

The champions beat fourth placed Green Buffaloes 3-0 away at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka on February 27 to stay third on the log.

Saturday’s victory came a week after Zesco beat their archrivals Nkana 2-1 at home in Ndola to see the latter slip from fourth to sixth after their Copperbelt derby defeat.

“The confidence is coming into the players after beating Nkana and we have beaten Buffaloes today (Saturday). These are big teams that are challenging the title,” Numba said.

The win saw Zesco briefly close the gap with leaders Arrows overnight by two points ahead of the latter’s away date on Sunday afternoon at Forest Rangers in Ndola.

“It is a very important victory especially that we are chasing the people ahead of us,” Numba said.

“I think beating Buffaloes away from home is something we have to give credit to the team for.”

Midfielder John Chingandu scored a brace with goals in the 22nd and 59th minutes while Chanda Mukuka cemented the 3 points in the 74th minute.

“They performed exceptionally well and we just have to keep encouraging them so that we can continue picking maximum points,” Numba added.

Zesco have 44 points and one point behind second placed Green Eagles who also won on Saturday when they collected a 1-0 home victory in Choma over bottom of the log Chambishi FC.

But Arrows will restore their four-point lead should they beat 12th placed Forest in the remaining Week 25 fixture of the weekend.

Buffaloes stay fourth despite the loss on 38 points where they are tied with Buildcon and Power Dynamos who are fifth and sixth respectively.
