Shepolopolo Zambia stars defender Lushomo Mweemba and midfielder Ireen Lungu have both passed late fitness tests for Green Buffaloes’ COSAFA Zone CAF Women Champions League qualify tournament Group B opener against Black Rhino Queens of Zimbabwe.
Mweemba and Lungu were battling with injuries ahead of Buffaloes Group B opener this Friday against Rhino Queens at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.
The duo made the 26-member team that flew out from Lusaka to South Africa on Tuesday ahead of the inaugural tournament that will be held in Durban from August 26 to September 4.
Lungu and Mweemba are part of five players in the Zambian women league champions team who were at the Tokyo Olympics with Chipolopolo in July.
Defenders Martha Tembo and Anita Mulenga plus midfielder Agnes Musase are Buffaloes’ other Olympians.
“We will not underate any team and are very focused on this tournament,” Lungu said.
“We gained a lot of experience at the Olympics and I believe that will help the team a lot at this tournament.”
Meanwhile, Buffaloes will play Tura Magic of Namibia in their final Group B match of their three team pool on August 31 that will see the top two advance to the semifinals of the seven club tournament on September 2.
The winner of the tournament will qualify for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League that Egypt is hosting at the end of the year.
