Green Buffaloes’ Shepolopolo stars midfielder Irene Lungu and defender Lushomo Mweemba are battling to be fit for the inaugural COSAFA Zone CAF Women’s Champions League qualifier tournament.
Buffaloes are Zambia’s envoys in the COSAFA zone qualifying tournament that will be held in Durban, South Africa from August 26 to September 4.
Coach Charles Halubono said it would be a massive blow for Buffaloes to be without two out of its five Shepolopolo stars for the tournament.
“The preparations have been going well and we have at least managed to train as a full team following the return of the players who were at the Olympics,”Halubono said.
“But we have two players who are not very fit and they are Irene Lungu and Lushomo Mweemba.
“We will have a final assessment before departure and then make the final decision.”
The Olympians played in all three of Shepolopolo’s Group F matches at the Tokyo Games with the highlight coming in Zambia’s final match when Lushomo was sent-off in the 13th minute of their 1-0 loss to Brazil on July 27 in Saitama.
Defenders Martha Tembo and Anita Mulenga plus midfielder Agnes Musase are Buffaloes’ other Olympians.
Buffaloes are in Group B together with Black Rhinos of Zimbabwe and Namibian representatives Tura Magic.
Halubono’s side kicks-off its CAF Women’s Champions League campaign on August 27 against Black Rhinos at King Zwelithini Stadium.
