Green Buffaloes have an army sides’ derby awaiting them in the group round of next month’s inaugural COSAFA Zone CAF Women’s Champions League qualifier tournament.
The Zambian club will face fellow military side Black Rhino Queens FC of Zimbabwe in Group B of the COSAFA Zone CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers following the tournament draws conducted on Thursday in Johannesburg.
The two clubs’ men’s counterparts have never met in continental competition but the Black Rhino Queens will be hoping to extend their male clubs’ unbeaten record against Zambian opposition.
Black Rhinos beat Power Dynamos 2-0 away in Kitwe and drew 1-1 at home in Harare in a second round tie of the 1985 edition of the CAF Champions Cup.
But Zambian clubs have reigned over their Zimbabwean opponents in continental action with the former eliminating their Zambezi River neighbours six times and the latter prevailing three times.
Buffaloes and Black Rhino Queens will not have to wait a minute for their derby showdown and clash in a Group B opener on August 27.
The Lusaka club wraps-up its Group B campaign against Tura Magic of Namibia on August 31.
Group B has only three teams in the seven-club competition that will run from August 26 to September 4.
Group A consists of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies of South Africa, Lesotho Defence Force, Botswana representatives Double Action Ladies and Eswatini side Manzini Wanderers.
The top two from each group will advance to the semifinals.
Winner of the COSAFA Zone tournament will qualify for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League tournament to be held at the end of the year.
