Zesco United will next week hold trials hoping to unearth talent from their junior teams following a successful 2020/2021 campaign that saw three in-house prospects make an impact in the Ndola sides’ championship winning season.
Club spokesperson Desmond Katongo said 33 players selected from Zesco’s six lower tier feeder clubs across the country will be hosted for week- long trials in Ndola.
“It is our policy that before we go in the transfer market, we give ourselves a chance to look at the players representing us in various developmental teams including the youth teams,” Zesco CEO Richard Mulenga told Zesco FC media.
“Remember, these developmental teams have been formulated to develop and nurture players with the objective of passing them on to ZESCO United football club.”
Last season, striker Enock Sakala Junior scored seven goals to finish runner-up on Zesco’s scorers chart behind Kenyan Jesse Were who finished the campaign with 10 league goals.
Midfielder John Chishimba and defender Samuel Sikaonga also established themselves as members of Zesco’s starting XI’s.
Four juniors in total, including midfielder and Zesco’s 2020/2021 season Young Player of The Year winner Chanda Mukuka, who joined from second division side Gomes FC, enjoyed first team status last term.
Next season, Zesco will be aiming for a tenth league title to become the second most successful club after tying with legendary ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers this past season.
Record Zambian champions Nkana have 13 league titles.
