Only three players from Chipolopolo’s 2019 COSAFA Cup winning team are in the final 20-member side heading to South Africa on July 6 to defend their regional crown.

All three are home-based and they include defender Isaac Shamujompa of Buildcon and Power Dynamos midfielder Benson Sakala.

Also back is Zesco United midfielder Kelvin Mubanga who will be one of three players in the team from the newly crowned 2020/2021 FAZ Super League champions Zesco United.

Young Green Eagles goalkeeper Gregory Sanjase is set for his COSAFA Cup debut following his notable display in Chipolopolo’s 1-0 away victory over Sudan in a friendly played on June 13 at Omdurman.

Chipolopolo coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has also named seven foreign-based stars in his team.

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene headlines that list for the five-time COSAFA Chip champions.

Six out of the seven call-ups are South Africa-based but missing from the list is South African-born Polokwane City goalkeeper Mwenya Chibwe who is still seeking an elusive COSAFA Cup debut since switching allegiance to his father’s birthplace in 2019.

Defender Kabaso Chongo of DR Congo giants TP Mazembe is the only foreign-based call-up from outside South Africa in the team.

Chipolopolo will kick off their COSAFA Cup title defence in a Group A fixture on July 8 against Lesotho.

Zambia have been moved to Group A after the 2021 COSAFA Cup format was revised from a three to two group tournament.

This follows Chipolopolo’s ex-Group B opponents Comoros and Madagascar COSAFA Cup withdrawal citing Covid-19 reasons.

Botswana, Eswatini and hosts Bafana Bafana South Africa are Chipolopolo’s new opponents in Group A.

The other Group B survivor Malawi stays put and will be joined by Group C sides Namibia, Mozambique, guest team Senegal and record six-time champions Zimbabwe.
