Teenage Zesco United striker Enock Sakala has just wrapped-up a memorable season with the newly crowned FAZ Super League champions.

The 19-year-old made his first-team debut in the just-ended 2020/2021 FAZ Super League season under new coach Mumamba Numba who was appointed at the start of the campaign in which the new boss promoted Sakala plus three other players from Zesco’s junior ranks.

Sakala went on to play a key role in Zesco’s successful ninth league title triumph this season and emerged as the clubs’ runner-up scorer on seven goals to finish three goals behind Jesse Were.

But the Sakala name is not new to Zesco.

His father Enock Sakala Senior was the 2007 season FAZ golden boot runner-up on 23 goals when he finished one goal behind midfielder and 2012 AFCON legend Rainford Kalaba when the latter also played for Zesco.

The duos’ goals propelled Zesco to its maiden league title that year.

Sakala senior later scored five goals in the 2008 CAF Champions League.

Africanfootbal.com Zambia caught up with Sakala Jnr to talk about stepping into some big shoes, goals and family.

AF: You have just won your first league title with Zesco and scored seven goals this season. How does it make you feel?

ENOCK SAKALA JNR: It is an incredible feeling playing in the ZPL and winning the championship for the first time because they are people who have been playing in the league for a long time but have never won it. Being my first season, it is a very big bonus for me.

AF: Your father Enock Sakala Senior was a big player at Zesco winning a couple of league titles and cup honours; do you hope to follow his footsteps?

ESJ: It encourages me a lot having a father who has played at a high level and won the ZPL title. But I would want to do more than what he did.

AF: Your Dad was also a prolific scorer during his time, is the golden boot a target for you in the near future?

ESJ: That would be my main target; I would like to win the ZPL top scorer award. It would be a big achievement.

But I want to set my own records and targets. I look up to him and admire what he has achieved in the ZPL but I wouldn’t say I would want to break his records but I want to set my own records.

AF: Does carrying the Enock Sakala name drive you to work harder?

ESJ: It does, my dad played football before and he watches me now that he has retired. But I also see him as just my father.

AF: Next season, you will play in your first-ever CAF Champions League, how pumped up are you for that experience?

ESJ: Very pumped up, I can’t wait for that. They say continental football is different from the league and together with the other new guys we all really can’t wait for that.
