Shepolopolo Zambia striker Grace Chanda says they just have to make the best out of the situation following the cancellation of the Team GB pre-Tokyo Olympics friendly.
Zambia’s hopes of playing a high-level pre-Olympic Women’s Football Tournament friendly before heading to Tokyo suffered a setback on Wednesday when the warm-up date in England against Team GB was called off.
The mandatory 14-day Covid-19 quarantine requirement for travellers from Zambia saw the July 1 friendly scheduled for Stoke cancelled.
“It won’t disturb our plans, we just have to stay focused on what we are doing in camp so that we can do the best we can at the Olympics,” Chanda said.
But Shepolopolo’s July 21 Group F opener opponents’ Holland will host Banyana Banyana South Africa on July 3 in Zwolle.
“They might be playing friendlies and we don’t but we just have to push ourselves and just make sure that we have that competitive spirit in us to make up for the lack of friendlies,” Chanda said.
Shepolopolo, who have been holding monthly residential training camps since late March in Lusaka, have so far only managed to play one friendly.
Banyana hosted Shepolopolo on April 10 in a friendly Zambia lost 3-1 at Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg.
But two other scheduled friendlies against Kenya in Lusaka and Mozambique away in Maputo fell through due to operational reasons.
